And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’ … But about the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, Hebrews 1:6, 8-9

In the earliest citations of the Septuagint , Justin Martyr, writing around 155-160 AD, quoted it as:
“Rejoice, O heavens, with him, and let all the angels of God worship him. Rejoice, O nations, with his people, let all the angels of God prevail for him,

In Isaiah 9:1-6 there is a messianic prophecy which certainly does point toward the Messiah being more than just a prophet and great spiritual leader. This prophecy is that the Messiah would come from the land of Zebulun and Naphtali. It just so happens that Nazareth is right on the border between the regions given to Zebulun and Naphtali.
The prophecy continues to identify the Messiah as a child who is born who will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.”

The Hebrew words:
What makes this rather intriguing is that all of these words are used in relation to the worship, service, and bowing that believers are to render to God.
According to the following Psalm all the nations will worship and serve God’s Messianic King:
“All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him.” Psalm 72:9-11

Hebrew “Kara”
“When Solomon had finished praying this entire prayer and supplication to the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread toward heaven.” 1 Kings 8:54
“All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him— those who cannot keep themselves alive.” Psalm 22:29

Hebrew “Shachah”
“All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,” Psalm 22:27
“All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name.” Psalm 86:9
“Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.” Psalm 96:9
“All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols — worship him, all you gods!” Psalm 97:7

Hebrew”Avad”
“Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.” Psalm 2:11
“Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.” Psalm 22:30
“Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.” Psalm 100:2

Some of these terms even appear together in connection with the worship given to YHWH.
For instance, here are a couple of texts where believers are forbidden from rendering “shachah” and “avad” to any other god besides the one true God:
“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,” Exodus 20:3-5
“When the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites, he commanded them: ‘Do not worship any other gods or bow down to them, serve them or sacrifice to them.’” 2 Kings 17:35

As renowned Messianic Jewish scholar Dr. Michael L. Brown put it:
… Many times in the psalms, the Lord and His anointed king are described in equally exalted terms, and similar reverence is required for both. Consider these following clear parallels (which I have translated for greater clarity): In Psalm 83:18, God is “the Most High over all the earth,” while in Psalm 89:28, it is the Davidic king, designated significantly as “firstborn,” who has been appointed “the most h…

Manus Lia Is Jesus the Creator?

The New Testament

Genesis 1:1 says that “God created the heavens and the earth.” Then, Colossians 1:16 gives the added detail that God created “all things” through Jesus Christ. The plain teaching of Scripture, therefore, is that Jesus is the Creator of the universe.

For by Him [Jesus] all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16).
Paul reveals several important things in this passage:

  1. Jesus is the exact image of God
  2. Jesus is the “first-born” of creation
  3. Jesus created everything
  4. Jesus is the reason for creation
  5. Jesus existed before everything
  6. Jesus holds creation together

There’s one God three persons and Jesus is the second member of the Trinity that created all things. For him and by him.

Hebrews 1:2 says, “In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” Christ is the agent of God’s creation.

All things were made through [Jesus], and without [Jesus] was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3)

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth” (Psalm 33:6).
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word (Jesus) was God” (John 1:1).

Hebrews indicates that God the father calls Jesus, the Son, God:
But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions” (Hebrews 1:8–9).

The Old Testament

This is what the Lord, the Creator and Holy One of Israel says…I am the one who made the earth and created people to live on it. With my hands I stretched out the heavens. All the millions of stars are at my command….I, the LORD Almighty, have spoken!” (Isaiah 45:11a, 12, 13b)

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth” (Psalm 33:6).

A Virgin Shall Conceive

A Virgin Shall Conceive
Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:23

This lesson compares Isaiah 7:14 with Matthew 1:23.

We consider the words of Isaiah as quoted by Matthew, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”(Matthew 1:23).

This is an example of a class of prophecies in the Old Testament which appear to have a dual fulfillment, that is to say they predict something to take place in the near future which symbolises something greater that will take place in the distant future. In our previous lesson we looked at the near fulfilment of this prophecy in the person of Maher-shalal-hash-baz Isaiah’s son . Now we look at its distant fulfilment in the Person of God’s Son.

1 The Virgin Birth

The birth of the Son of God was a much greater sign than the birth of Isaiah’s son. Isaiah’s son was conceived by natural procreation. The Son of God was conceived supernaturally.

Isaiah says, “I approached the prophetess and she conceived and gave birth to a son”(Isaiah 8:3) nothing supernatural in that.Matthew has something quite different to say: “Now the birth of Jesus was as follows: After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:18)Luke, in his account of the birth of Jesus, confirms that Mary was a virgin when she conceived (Luke 1:26-38).

In some translations the word “almah” in Hebrew is rendered “maiden” or “young woman” rather than “virgin” (Isaiah 7:14). However, the Holy Spirit’s translation (Matthew 1:23) is the Greek word for “virgin” showing that the Holy Spirit approves of, even insists upon, using the word “virgin” (or its equivalent in the language of translation) to render the Isaiah passage when referring it to the birth of Christ.

2 Christ’s Birth as a Sign

Isaiah’s son, as we saw in our previous lesson, was born in a natural manner. Ahaz had refused to ask for a supernatural sign. So ironically he received a “sign” that was no wonder, but merely a reminder of coming doom. The Isaiah 7:14 prophecy however, in its distant fulfilment, was to be fulfilled in a miraculous manner, namely by a virgin birth.

Surely this is what one might expect of the birth of the Son of God. We would expect it to be miraculous and wonderful, far more marvellous than a normal conception and birth. Using a word other than “virgin” makes the Isaiah passage meaningless for the birth of Christ. How could it be a “sign” in the distant future for a young woman to get pregnant and to give birth due to natural causes? It would be impossible to identify the sign if the young woman got pregnant naturally like thousands of others do.

Therefore Matthew, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, translates Isaiah 7:14 using parthenos, virgin. That is what we sensibly and logically expect, a conception that is miraculous and unique. Nothing less than a miraculous conception would do, if God truly became flesh to dwell among us (John 1:1), and if the child born is truly the Son of the heavenly Father. It is not too strong to say that if we deny the virgin birth, we deny that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

3 The Christ Child’s Name

The main clue that Isaiah 7:14 has both a near and distant fulfilment, is the child’s name. Isaiah was told to call his child Maher-shalal-hash-baz meaning “swift to the booty, speedy to the prey” (Isaiah 8:1-3). The child in the prophecy however was to be called Immanuel meaning “God with us”.

After Isaiah’s son was born, Isaiah again prophesied the birth of a child, showing that he did not consider the real child of promise to be his own son, but rather the Son of God. This second prophecy is recorded two chapters further on (Isaiah 9:6-7). A most important element in this later prophecy is the development of the child’s name…

“For unto us a child is born,
Unto us a a Son is given,
And the government will be upon his shoulder,
And his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.

The increase of his government and peace
Shall not end
Upon the throne of David,
And over his kingdom,
To order and establish it
With judgment and justice,
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of Hosts
Will perform this.”
(Isaiah 9:6-7)

It is clear from this second prophecy that only One can fulfill it, the Son of God himself. The name attributed to him here is an expansion of the name Immanuel “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23). Now such a name is obviously not appropriate for Isaiah’s son. We are confronted here with a name that no human child could wear, unless that child be the very Son of God. So Isaiah’s son was given another name, Maher-shalal-hash-baz “swift to the booty, speedy to the prey”. The name of the child of the immediate fulfilment bespoke doom.

The name of the child of the distant fulfilment bespoke hope.

Understanding The Nature Of Prophecy

Many Muslims make the mistake of thinking that the message of the Gospel is simply what we find authored by the Apostles and their writers after Jesus’ death. Worse they accuse the Gospel writers of retrofitting events to match prophetic statements in the Old Testament. This is a result of bad education and misinformation of Muslim teachers.
The truth is that Gospel was already authored by God and its events sealed, long before the New Testament era. God, speaking hundreds of years earlier, said in Isaiah 43:
“I, even I, am the Lord , And besides Me there is no savior. I have declared and saved, I have proclaimed, And there was no foreign god among you; Therefore you are My witnesses,” Says the Lord, “that I am God. Indeed before the day was, I am He; And there is no one who can deliver out of My hand; I work, and who will reverse it?” (Isaiah 43:11‭-‬13 NKJV)
And in Isaiah 46:
“Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’ Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it.” (Isaiah 46:9‭-‬11 NKJV)
Or as the HCSB puts it:
“I declare the end from the beginning, and from long ago what is not yet done, saying: My plan will take place, and I will do all My will. I call a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose from a far country. Yes, I have spoken; so I will also bring it about. I have planned it; I will also do it. Listen to me, you hardhearted, far removed from justice: I am bringing My justice near; it is not far away, and My salvation will not delay. I will put salvation in Zion, My splendor in Israel.” (Isaiah 46:10‭-‬13 HCSB)
This is the signature and seal of God Almighty, who is outside of time and space, who simultaneously, not only tells the end from the beginning and performs and makes sure it is fulfilled, but He occupies and controls events in all of that time in an instant.
“See, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. Then the Lord you seek will suddenly come to His temple, the Messenger of the covenant you desire — see, He is coming,” says the Lord of Hosts.” (Malachi 3:1 HCSB)
The truth is that the Gospel was written before Jesus was born. See Isaiah 52:7-10, Isaiah 55 1-13, Isaiah 61:1 for examples and many other places. It’s not a new book which Jesus came to deliver! The “book” of the Gospel is and always was in the Old Testament writings. The Gospel is in the Hebrew scripture of Moses, David and the Prophets and seers.
The New Testament is simply the record and witness of the fulfilment and explaining this mystery contained in the book of Old. As Augustine wrote “the new is in the old concealed the old is in the new revealed”
Psalm 40:7 “Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me.”
It was written in the prophets, in the Psalms and in the Law and was sealed telling us of things to come. Just as Jesus said:
“Then He told them, “These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you — that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day, and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:44‭-‬47 HCSB)
So when a Muslim asks where is the book of Jesus? they know not what they speak of. They speak according to ignorance they have inherited in a pious religiosity, the outward appearance and form of which impresses them but which has no substance. But what they are unaware of is that what we commonly call the Gospels is not just the Gospel itself but the necessary God ordained record of its fulfillment by Jesus Christ contained and promised in the Old.
“which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures,” (Romans 1:2 NKJV)
So where do Muslims get their ideas from? Not from history but all from one man who didn’t know anything about it, was unable to read and relied on hearsay, on which he constructed his own childish misconception of these things. Not even he but his followers set forth these ignorant man-made ideas of which they have no certainty at all and which were formed 600 years after the facts by the desert pagan Mohammed. And then they wonder why what we have in the Biblical record of prophetic fulfilment doesn’t match the ignorance they hold. They take Muhammad’s ignorance and mistakes as their word of God.
But the truth is the Gospel was already written in the Old and in the Old contained — and in one sense all Jesus did was to come and fulfill it. Hence why He was always guided by an unseen timeline and hence why we find the words “because His hour had not yet come” (John 7:6; 7:30). And when He came He announced it was being fulfilled in Him. He didn’t write it for the simple reason it was already written — He didn’t come to bring a book — HE CAME TO DO IT, BE IT AND FULFILL IT.
-In Luke 4 Jesus quotes Isaiah 61:1-2 and declares those verses fulfilled before the congregation:
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, THIS DAY IS THIS SCRIPTURE FULFILLED IN YOUR EARS.”
-THE END FROM THE BEGINNING
Surah 4.157 should be an embarrassment to every Muslim with an ounce of intellect because it alone proves that the Quran can never be inspired by God.
If God had not intended Jesus should die He would have told us so BEFORE not half a millennium AFTER the events.
This is what sets God’s word apart from counterfeit non canonical writings. Fulfilled prophecy. God knows the end from the beginning. To get the authors’ of the Bible to weave prophecy (both near and far) into their inspired writings is easy for Him but impossible for His enemies.
This is where Islam destroys itself by re-writing the Gospel narrative after the events and the fulfillment of hundreds of prophecies from hundreds of years beforehand. To deny the crucifixion Muslims have to also deny all the prophetic words which reference it from the Old Testament.
One thing Muslims can be certain about is that if God had never intended that Jesus should die He would have told us so in advance. If you don’t accept that fundamental truth about how prophecy works then you have no conception of the Bible period.
This is what exposes the Quran as a lie. The Quran contradicts the nature, tradition, and logic as well as the SUBSTANCE of prophecy! Prophecy is linear!
Surah 4:157 is NOT only something that the True God (YHWH) never ever said, but that’s NOT even how He functions! Let’s look by recapping the word of testimony on those passages from Isaiah and others:

  • “Behold, the former things have happened, and I declare new things. I tell you about them BEFORE [Not after!] they come up.” (Isaiah 42:9)
  • “I declare the END FROM THE BEGINNING [Not the beginning from the end!], and from ancient times things that are not yet done.” (Isaiah 46:10)
Yahweh will not do or perform anything prophetically without FIRST making his plans and purposes known to the holy prophets!
  • “Surely the Lord Yahweh will do NOTHING, UNLESS he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7)
  • “See, I [Jesus] have told you AHEAD OF TIME” (‭Matthew‬ ‭24‬:‭25‬).
    And,
  • “From now on, I TELL YOU BEFORE IT HAPPENS, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he.” (‭John‬ ‭13‬:‭19‬)
  • “Now I have told you BEFORE IT HAPPENS so that, when it happens, you may believe.” (‭John‬ ‭14:29‬)
    So the questions become ~
  • “Who has shown this from ancient time? Who has declared it of old?” (Isaiah‬ ‭45:21b‬)
    Or,
  • “Who is he who says, and it comes to pass, when Yahweh doesn’t command it?” (‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:37‬)
God is not a God of confusion, ruse or deception. If Yahweh was going to deceive people into believing that Jesus died by crucifixion but really did not, He would have FIRST informed his prophets (before that time) what His plans were, not 600 years afterward! So that in fact it could NEVER have been a DECEPTION in the first place. The Quran, AS ALWAYS is false on the matter!
“Yahweh of Armies has sworn, saying, “Surely, as I have thought, so shall it happen; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand … For Yahweh of Armies has planned, and who can stop it? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?” (‭Isaiah‬ ‭14‬:‭24, 27‬)

-SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

“All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet.” (Matthew 1:22)
That a virgin would bring forth a son is astounding; that Jesus will certainly save His people is reassuring; that God would condescend to be with us is humbling. But there is another point that Matthew purposefully interjects into the inspired account of Jesus’ birth, and it is this:
“All this was done, that it might be fulfilled.”
When you think of Biblical prophecy, do you think of God DESCRIBING events that will later come to pass, or of God DECLARING that events will later come to pass? In other words, is prophecy simply God “looking down through the tunnel of time,” seeing what is going to happen, and reporting what He sees? Or is prophecy the declaration of God, based upon His almighty power and wisdom, of what He has foreordained to happen?
If we speculated that prophecy is merely description based on foresight, then we would expect Matthew to say something like this: “So God had spoken all these things by the prophet because they were going to happen later.” But Matthew actually says the opposite! ‘All this was done, that it might be fulfilled…” All these things happened, Matthew says, because God said they were going to happen!
From Matthew’s careful wording in this story, we learn that God’s word is more certain, more secure, more immovable than any event on earth. Reality itself must conform to the perfect purpose and plan of God. And this choice of words by Matthew is no mistake or anomaly. Matthew uses the exact same phrase—”that it might be fulfilled”—no less than ten times throughout his gospel!
Clearly, Matthew intends for us to see God’s omnipotence shaping reality with His Word. Is that the way you view the world around you today?

-CHALLENGE TO MUSLIMS:

Muslims who want to deny the Biblical record must not only find evidence that the events surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus did not take place (something they have never done and cannot do since such evidence does not exist); they also have the even harder task of denying the prophetic record of the Old Testament which established and SET IN STONE what was already decreed in advance by God.
Muslims since the challenge is impossible why don’t you start to question why the Quran rejects what is established fact? Ask yourselves who was defeated at the Cross? Ask yourselves why it is that Islam fits Satans agenda perfectly. Find reasons to reject the Quran which is condemned in every page by the authority which tests it.
Start asking yourselves, why it is that the Bible teaches us to test everything whereas the Quran discourages asking questions because it might lead some people to abandon their faith. Why is the god of Islam so insecure that he cannot stand criticism and cannot tolerate anyone ever using their freedom of conscience to leave Islam?

Jesus Birth Prophecy Fulfilled

Luke 1 32-33
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Isaiah 9.6-7
6 For to us a child is born,to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

The Messiah Would be God!

Prophecy: Isaiah 9:6–7
Fulfillment: Matthew 12:42; Luke 1:32–33, 79; John 14:27; Acts 10:36; Romans 9:5; Philippians 4:17; Colossians 2:3; 2 Thessalonians 3:3

In the midst of a messianic section extending from Isaiah 7 to Isaiah 12, we find an extraordinary pair of verses:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:6-7; Hebrew Bible, verses 5-6).

In these verses, a child is at the forefront of Isaiah’s prophecies, as it was in Isaiah 7:14. This time the child is given a name consisting of four exalted titles.

Is that child God?

This name has generated much discussion. Is it a description of the child himself? Then we would translate it as something like, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” This means that the child himself is called Counselor, God, Father, and Prince.

Or, like many biblical names, is it a statement about God? Then we would translate it as something like, “Wonderful in Counsel is the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace,” making the name into a sentence about God.

The Jewish Publication Society version of 1985, along with various other versions, translates the name as a statement about God. Interestingly, though, some Jewish traditions applied the names directly to the child. For example, Deuteronomy Rabbah says that “The Messiah is called by eight names,” and includes five references to the Isaiah verses, saying that among the Messiah’s names are Wonderful, Counselor, God, Hero, and Eternal Father of Peace (The Hebrew for each name, as found in Isaiah, is pele’, yo’etz, el, gibbor, avi’ ad shalom). The Midrash Pereq Shalom says that the Messiah’s name is Peace, quoting from these verses, “for it is said, Everlasting Father, Prince Peace.”1 The Targum to Isaiah—a translation into Aramaic—as well as the medieval commentator Ibn Ezra also refer the names to the child.2

The future king

It helps to look at the context of Isaiah 7–12, in which the prophet sees a future time of unparalleled prosperity, wisdom, and peace. We know that no period such as Isaiah describes was ever realized under any king of Israel or Judah. This is why as we move through the prophets and into the later books of the Old Testament, we find that there is still the hope for a future ruler and a future period of blessing and prosperity. By the end of the Old Testament, that ruler has still not arrived. This means that Isaiah 9 and similar passages awaited their fulfillment beyond the Old Testament, even if some human kings did display wisdom or brought a measure of peace.

And beyond the Old Testament is exactly where we find Isaiah 9:6-7 fulfilled:

Luke 1:32-33 describes Jesus as ruler on the throne of David, exactly as Isaiah 9:7 (Hebrew Bible, v. 6) describes in the verse that follows immediately after 9:6-7. There Isaiah says about the child, “Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom.” Luke, in similar words, says:

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (Luke 1:32-33)

The Prince of Peace

Luke 1:79 similarly tells about Jesus bringing peace, just as the child of Isaiah 9 is called the “Prince of Peace”: Jesus will “give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, [and will] guide our feet into the way of peace.” Jesus himself said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” And Peter, in Acts 10:36, speaks about God and says, “As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ…”

The New Testament throughout shows that Jesus is indeed the “Mighty God” who has come among us as a human being. Jesus does things only God can do, such as forgive sins and command nature to obey him. The writers of the New Testament apply directly to Jesus verses from the Old Testament that referred to God. And verses such as Romans 9:5 are explicit: “To them [the Jewish people] belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Messiah, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.”

As to being wise in counsel (or, a Wonderful Counselor) Jesus spoke of himself in this way: “The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here” (Matthew 12:42). Colossians 2:3 tells us that in Jesus “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” And as for being the “Everlasting Father” (in Isaiah, a title that meant “protector”), Philippians 4:17 says that “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Messiah Jesus”—combining peace and protection together. And in 2 Thessalonians 3:3, we read that, “the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.”

Was Isaiah speaking of a human king of his time, as some believe? The kings of Israel never brought about the everlasting rule and time of justice and righteousness that Isaiah described. Some individual kings brought in temporary peace, some displayed wisdom, some displayed godly attributes. Many did not. But only the Messiah will do so permanently. Jesus the Messiah has begun that process, and will bring it to fruition.

Protevangelium

The first mention in the Old Testament that the coming Christ would be born of a virgin occurs right at the beginning.
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Genesis 3:15
This prophecy, known as the Protevangelium, comes from the most ancient oracle known to man, the oracle that the Lord pronounced when He found our first parents, Adam and Eve, guilty of sin. The Lord is speaking to Satan, who has enticed “the woman,” Eve, into disobeying the Lord’s command against eating fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He is saying that Satan will someday be crushed and utterly defeated by the seed of the woman.
The pronoun used to designate the seed is “his” (in “his heel”). In place of “it” (in “it shall bruise”), the more accurate translation is “he” (1). Therefore, the coming conqueror must be a single man. But why is He called the seed of a woman? A child is ordinarily regarded as the seed of his father and forefathers. The striking and unnatural character of the expression “her seed” suggests that it is a uniquely fitting name for the victor over Satan. Unlike other men, He would be the seed of a woman only. He would not be a man’s seed. A virgin would conceive Him without losing her virginity.

Isaiah’s Oracle

Over seven hundred years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah enlarged upon the Protevangelium.
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
The name Immanuel means, “God with us.” Isaiah is appending to Genesis 3:15 the information that the virgin-born conqueror of Satan would be God Himself in the flesh.

Matthew 1.20
Matthew 1:21–23 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

23  “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”
